Play! Café is a Social Enterprise in Hanoi, started by the LCMS. Since 2014, Play! Café has promoted healthy child development through a family-friendly environment, which encourages exploration, learning, and parent-child interactions.

The coffee shop and play center has drawn customers from both Vietnamese and international communities. Educational and creative programming is regularly offered, such as finger painting, learning English through games and play, singing and dancing to fun songs, and also STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) activities to inspire lifelong learning.

Play! Café also provides electronic resources through its Facebook page, as well as free workshops provided by local experts to address health concerns and share information about child-development.

ALEA 2016 includes an optional pre-conference-service opportunity at the Play! Café on September 15. On this day, participants will learn more about this social enterprise and the impact it has had on the local community and families. Educators can provide service to the Play! Café by preparing a short activity or lesson, which can be replicated by Play! Café staff members. Numbers are limited; ALEA 2016 conference registration will include sign-up for the pre-conference service opportunity.

September 15 Optional Preconference Service Event and Concordia Hanoi Dedication
Preconference participants should arrive in Hanoi September 14, in the evening. Airport pick-up is included with the Preconference registration cost. The Preconference event will conclude with dinner and Vietnamese water puppet performance. Participants will be taken to the Sofitel Plaza for hotel and conference registration.

Educators can support the Play! Café social enterprise by leading a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, or math) activity for children between 5-9 years of age. The activity should not last longer than 30 minutes. Educators should bring along supplies needed to lead the activity and will be asked to provide a lesson plan for Play! Café.

The Preconference registration cost of $60 includes hotel with breakfast at the Sunset Westlake hotel (Per person price on double-occupancy room. Be ready to provide the name of your roommate or ALEA will match you with an appropriate roommate. You will receive a follow-up email regarding hotel roommate and other details.)

September 14:

Afternoon/Evening arrival at the Hanoi Nội Bài International Airport (HAN). Transport to Sunset Westlake hotel. Dinner on own.

September 15:

Breakfast at hotel.
Tour and history of Play! Café.
STEAM activities demonstrated at Play! Café for staff or participants.

Aimee work 087Aimee Cima has been living in Hanoi, Vietnam since 2007, serving as a career worker of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS). She received both B.S. and M.S. degrees in the field of Dietetics from James Madison University and worked as the Clinical Nutrition Manager for Lutheran Senior Services in St Louis, MO before moving to Vietnam.

She is married to Rev. J.P. Cima, also a called worker of the LCMS, and they have two daughters, Celeste and Bella. In 2013, Aimee developed the business plan for the social enterprise, Play! Café, which opened in early 2014. Currently, she oversees the human care programs for the LCMS in Vietnam, including Play! Café, leadership training for university students, and community development projects; as well as facilitating service learning projects. Aimee is also an active parent at Concordia International School Hanoi, where Celeste and Bella attend 2nd and 4th grade.
