Peer Leadership Development
This summer the Concordia Welfare Education Foundation (CWEF) and Ember, an organization created by Hong Kong International School (HKIS) alumni, teamed up to lead a three-day Summer English and Leadership Camp in Guangdong Province, China. Each year CWEF and Ember provide financial support to allow highly qualified high school girls to remain in school in this poor area of northwest Guangdong Province. In addition, supporters offer educational opportunities for the girls throughout the year.
This year’s summer camp was attended by nearly 50 local students from the two best schools in the area. One of the highlights of the trip was a visit to a local elderly home, an especially rewarding experience for the scholarship girls. Twenty-four volunteers attended the trip, including seven HKIS alumni.
Some of the group’s activities during the camp included English teaching, singing, performing and interacting at a local elderly home, home visits to the homes of the girls, and skit preparation and performances.
