PLEA Service Learning Workshop in Manila

PLEA Service Learning Workshop in Manila

On January 21st, 60 educators from five schools of the Philippine Lutheran Education Association and members of ALEA met at the newly-renovated Lutheran Center in Manila to study the educational philosophy and application of service learning to support and deepen students’ learning. In addition to studying the theory and practical examples of service learning, the workshop also considered the distinctives that can be celebrated in applying service learning to curriculum in a Christian school.

ALEA’s executive director, Karin Semler, and associate director, Iantha Scheiwe visited the five schools in the days leading up to the workshop. These visits provided invaluable perspective to apply service learning concepts to the context of the communities that the PLEA schools serve. “Visiting each of the five PLEA schools prior to the service learning workshop was very helpful. We could see each unique school community in action and learn about the programming and activities. I was very impressed by the teachers’ commitment to student learning and heart for ministry. Each PLEA school positively impacts their respective neighborhoods and communities. Additionally, Iantha and I experienced warm Filipino hospitality and were treated to student musical performances.” — Karin Semler

Rev. Reyes, President of the Lutheran Church of the Philippines, kicked off the workshop with inspiring words and reminding us that “our Lord Jesus Christ is the original service learning teacher.” He granted us permission to share his message. It can be found here. Following the workshop, the teacher and administrator teams will be developing service learning proposals. The workshop is intended not as a one-time activity, but the start of a partnership to learn from each other about the rich ways that service integrated with curriculum both enriches students’ learning and also takes time for discernment of needs and the responses each school is called to put into action. Through this active serving, may students take joy in their transformation in Christ and reflect that joy in sharing Jesus’ love with others.

ALEA thanks Mr. Eduardo Jiloca, President of PLEA, and the entire PLEA leadership team, including our own ALEA board member, Mr. Eljay Abadiano, for making this workshop happen.
