Children’s Community Health Education
During five Saturday trainings in the summer of 2013, Grade 10 students at Vox Dei Academy (VDA), Cavite, Philippines received community health education training by Lutheran Church in the Philippines Human Care coordinators. After the training, VDA students taught impoverished children lessons in hygiene, healthy eating, and basic health care. More than double the anticipated number of children participated. Bible stories, games, singing, dancing, and lunch were regular parts of the Saturday program held in September and October, 2013. Vox Dei Academy director L.J. Abadiano wrote that through service learning students were able to, “understand the value of helping others…and lead more meaningful activities that promote service to others.” Funding of US$1000 for this project was awarded through the Allan and Sandy Schmidt Service Learning Grant Program.
